New Delhi: Two US service members were killed and another remained missing after Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks targeted American and partner forces in Jordan, the US Central Command said on Saturday.
The attack took place on July 17 as US and partner forces attempted to defend against the Iranian barrage. CENTCOM did not disclose the exact location of the attack or how the personnel died. New York Post reported the details from the military statement.
Injured troops discharged“Four American service members who were injured in the strikes were evacuated to hospitals in Jordan and have since been discharged, while others treated for minor injuries have returned to duty,” CENTCOM said.
The command said it would not release the identities of the service members killed until officials informed their families. It also withheld further information out of respect for those affected.
The deaths marked another major escalation in the conflict between Washington and Tehran. The attack also added to concerns about the safety of US troops deployed across the Middle East.
Mojtaba warns WashingtonThe confirmation of the American casualties came as tensions rose over the future of an interim agreement signed about a month earlier.
Iran signalled that it would suspend its commitments under the agreement. The move raised doubts about efforts to end the conflict through negotiations.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned that the United States would face “unforgettable lessons” if it continued attacking Iran. He also described US President Donald Trump’s signature as “worthless and invalid”, according to The Times of India.
Khamenei also warned that Iran and its regional allies, often described as the “Axis of Resistance”, would respond to further US military action.
