Nowadays, people spend generously on sound systems and prefer devices that offer superior sound quality. However, budget constraints—whether high or low—often prevent people from purchasing such audio devices. Furthermore, even when people install expensive speakers at home, they sometimes fail to achieve good sound quality. Interestingly, the issue often lies not with the speakers themselves, but with their placement. Let’s explore this new rule for achieving better audio quality.
The 38% Rule is designed to improve your audio experience. According to this rule, if you are using speakers or a home theater system in a room, your seating position should be at approximately 38% of the room's total length.
For instance, if your room is 5 meters long, you should sit at a distance of about 1.9 meters from the front wall. Sitting in this position allows sound waves to reach your ears in a more balanced manner, significantly enhancing the audio experience.
Following the 38% Rule offers several benefits. It provides more balanced bass and reduces the perception of echoes and external noise. Dialogue becomes clearer, and the details of individual instruments in music stand out more distinctly. The surround sound experience also feels more realistic.
It is worth noting that achieving superior audio involves more than just adjusting your seating position; other factors matter too. Keep the speakers a short distance away from the wall. Maintain equal spacing between the left and right speakers. Angle the speakers slightly towards the listener. If the room has excessive bare walls or glass surfaces, use curtains or carpets to minimize sound reverberation.
Please note that this is not a rigid rule, but rather a helpful starting guideline. Every room differs in terms of size, furniture, wall design, and the materials used. Therefore, by using the '38% Rule' as a starting point, you can find the best sound by making slight adjustments to the positioning of your seat or speakers.
