Pakistan’s pro-Taliban Maulana Fazlur Rahman openly challenged Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir. Fazlur, the head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, one of the largest political parties in the country, has become one of the political figures at the moment. He has challenged the political supremacy of the military-controlled Pakistan administration. Practice started with him naturally.

Mufti Mahmud is the founder of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam. His son is Fazlur. It is good to say that Mufti was also the former Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Fazlur has always called for the introduction of Sharia law in the Pakistani administration. He has been in close contact with the Taliban of Afghanistan for a long time. Fazlur has always been opposed to the army’s ‘intrusion’ into Pakistan’s politics. He made his political debut as part of the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD), a multi-party coalition formed to oppose the military dictatorship of General Zia-ul-Haq.

This is not the first time that Fazlur has clashed with Munir. In December last year, he also strongly condemned Islamabad’s strategy of cross-border attacks inside Afghanistan to attack militant groups like the TTTP.

Later, he was seen to express his anger against the army several times. This time he directly challenged Munir. He was heard to say, “If you have to do politics, keep the uniform open. Participate in the elections. Only then will it be clear how many votes you can get for the uniform.”

This is not the first time that Fazlur has clashed with Munir. In fact, he has long been a supporter of the Taliban in Afghanistan. His party has been directly supporting the Taliban since the middle of the last century. He was also seen leading anti-US and pro-Taliban rallies in major cities of Pakistan.
