Rain is set to hit the UK for six days, bringing the hot summer weather to a halt.

Britain has basked in heatwaves in May, June, and July this summer, with temperatures soaring past 35C in each warm spell. The mercury hit 37C in Norfolk in late June.

But the hot, dry weather stops from Tuesday (July 21) as rain will hit the country for six days, and sweep across millions of homes at the weekend, according to the Met Office.

While rain will fall as scattered showers on Tuesday and Wednesday, and is largely confined to northern Scotland on Thursday and Friday, forecasters believe this weekend could be a washout for many.

The Met Office forecast for this week said: "Cloudy in the north [on Tuesday] night with outbreaks of light drizzle in places. Largely dry elsewhere with clear spells and a few fog patches. Showers possible in East Anglia.

"Wednesday: Staying cloudy and cool in the far north on Tuesday with light showers possible. Dry and sunny elsewhere with some very warm sunshine."

Experts added the outlook Thursday to Saturday is: "Settled through to Friday with patchy cloud and showers in the north. Very warm in the south. Outbreaks of more widespread rain push into the north on Saturday."

On Saturday night, most of Scotland and northern England will be blanketed by rain, which is set to move south in the early hours of Sunday.

However, where it remains dry, temperatures will stay warm. The south of England and Wales is set to have the best of the weather this week.

In London, high temperatures range from 25C to 28C for the rest of the week, with sun and cloud forecast.

It's a similar story in Cardiff, where highs will sit between 25C and 27C until Saturday, when sun gives way to cloud and the mercury falls to 22C, with drizzle forecast on Sunday.

In Cornwall, families enjoying a summer holiday break will see highs of 22C until Sunday, when drizzle is also forecast.

The rest of July will be 'changeable', the Met Office added: "This period looks like being largely changeable, with many parts likely to see some rain at times.

"Rain will spread southeast across most if not all parts of the UK through this weekend, with some showers following. Further bands of rain look likely to spread southeast next week, interspersed with sunny spells and some showers."
