Peugeot has confirmed that its popular 208 hatchback will continue to be available with petrol power well into the next decade. Chief Executive Officer Alain Favey stated that the newly launched electric e-208 will be sold alongside the internal combustion engine (ICE) version, rather than replacing it entirely.

Favey explained, “We will keep offering the 208 in its current form to serve the part of the market that is not yet ready for an electric vehicle and still requires ICE or hybrid solutions. We will maintain these options on the current 208 for as long as there is demand.”

At present, the Peugeot 208 comes with two mild-hybrid petrol engine options, along with the recently introduced Turbo 100 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. These powertrain choices are expected to remain available beyond 2030 to meet the needs of customers who prefer traditional engines over electric ones.

However, Favey noted that Peugeot does not anticipate a strong long-term demand for petrol-powered variants. “We firmly believe that demand for battery-electric vehicles will increase very significantly. The growth of BEVs will continue in the coming years, and that is where our strategic focus lies,” he added. “That’s why, for us, launching the new e-208 marks the most significant milestone in the B-segment.”

Although the mechanical foundations of the existing 208 are expected to remain largely unchanged, Peugeot is likely to undertake a major visual and interior refresh. These updates will align the petrol model’s design with that of the new e-208, ensuring that it stays appealing and competitive as the model approaches its seventh year in production.
