Marc Cucurella has confirmed that he will fulfil one of the most unusual promises made before the World Cup, following Spain’s final victory over Argentina. The left-back announced that he will get a tattoo of coach Luis de la Fuente’s face after La Roja lifted the trophy at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

A promise etched in ink

Before the tournament began, Cucurella had made his pledge clear on Cadena COPE, declaring: “If we win the World Cup, I’ll get a tattoo of Luis de la Fuente’s face.”

After the final whistle of Spain’s 1-0 win over Argentina on Sunday, with his winner’s medal proudly around his neck, the new Real Madrid defender wasted no time in taking to social media to find an artist capable of bringing his commitment to life, writing: “Any tattoo artists in the room?”

Choosing the perfect spot

Although determined to keep his word, the Spanish full-back admitted that he is still undecided about where to place the tattoo.

“I don’t know yet. I have to think about where I’m going to get it,” Cucurella told Marca in the mixed zone. “People will ask me about it, so it doesn’t need to be in a visible place, but we’ll see. I think we have a long journey ahead of us now, I hope people give me ideas. I’ll think about it, and then I’ll have to do it.”

De la Fuente also weighed in on the topic during the post-match celebrations after Spain’s World Cup victory. Rather than discouraging his players from such bold gestures, the coach highlighted the importance of integrity and keeping one’s word, jokingly adding: “I’ve already told them they were wrong. And if you make a promise, you have to keep it. I’m not that ugly either.”

After nearly two months together, Spain’s players have built a close-knit bond that Cucurella believes played a crucial role in their victory over Argentina.

“This summer hasn’t been easy for us, and I’m very happy. It’s been a long journey; we’ve been together for a long time, and now it’s time to celebrate. We came here with a goal, we’ve spent almost 50 days in training camp, and now it’s time to celebrate, be together, and remember everything we’ve achieved,” he said.
