Summer is usually when we swap all the darker socks in our wardrobe for white ones. Not only do they look better with shorts, but the lighter fabric can keep your feet cooler. However, it is unfortunately common to throw white socks away as they are one of the most difficult laundry items to keep clean at this time of year.
White socks tend to look worse at the moment as we are sweating more, and all those natural body oils will build up in the material. Sweat stains will trap dirt in the fibres, and they can also set when exposed to high temperatures, which makes it harder to clean white socks even if you wash them regularly. Luckily, Benjamin Thery from Cyber Techwear has shared that there is a way to get white socks clean and looking brand new again, as all you really need is some lemon juice.
Benjamin said: “Lemon juice is one of the most effective natural solutions for whitening white socks. The acidic properties in lemon juice help cut through dirt and stains that regular washing might leave behind.”
Lemon juice contains a substance called citric acid, which can loosen sweat residue and other deeply lodged stains to make white socks much easier to clean.
However, the real reason to try washing lemon juice in white socks in summer is that citric acid is known to react to the ultraviolet in sunlight and will create a bleaching effect.
Using lemon juice will help get most of the stains out of your socks, and then when you hang them up to dry, the sunlight will help break down any remaining dirt and whiten the fabric.
A bottle of lemon juice will deep clean socks, get rid of any lingering smells and brighten up the fabric so you can enjoy the rest of summer without worrying about your laundry.
How to wash white socks using lemon juice
All you have to do is place your white socks in a large basin, fill it up with hot water and also add a generous amount of lemon juice.
Leave the white socks soaking in the solution for at least two to three hours, but it is also fine to leave them overnight.
Once the socks are done soaking, wash them like your normally would using normal laundry detergent.
Hang them outside to dry in the sun, and after a few hours, your socks should look crisp and clean without having to scrub at them or use harsh chemicals.
