Nicholas Pooran produced one of the innings of the tournament so far, striking an unbeaten 58 from just 22 balls to carry MI London to a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers at The Oval, with a full 16 balls remaining. The win was built on a composed middle-order recovery, anchored by Pooran alongside captain Sam Curran, who finished unbeaten on 60 from 39 deliveries.
The Chase Takes Shape
Chasing a target of 144, MI London found themselves in a precarious position at 51 for 3 after 44 deliveries, with the innings requiring both steadiness and acceleration. It was at that point that Pooran arrived at the crease to join Curran, and the dynamic of the chase shifted considerably. The pair put on an unbroken partnership of 93 runs in just 40 balls to seal the contest.
Curran had been at the crease longer, weathering the early pressure alongside James Vince before Vince's departure left the innings in need of fresh impetus. With the floodlights on and conditions easing, the ball began to travel more freely, and Pooran capitalised with a display of clean, aggressive striking that gave Sunrisers no route back into the match.
The Winning Moment
The victory was sealed in the final over bowled by Matthew Potts. After Curran launched a Potts full toss over wide long on for six, Pooran ended the match in the very next scoring delivery, driving beyond mid off's reach to the boundary. It was a fitting conclusion to an innings that had taken the game away from Sunrisers with remarkable efficiency.
Potts conceded a four and a six in the closing stages, having also sent down a wide yorker that Pooran was unable to reach — a rare moment of relief in an over that otherwise belonged entirely to the MI London batting pair.
Pooran Reflects on the Win
Named the Meerkat Match Hero, Pooran spoke after the match about what had pleased him most. He highlighted the contribution of Vince and Curran in stabilising the innings before his arrival, noting that it was unlucky for Vince to be dismissed when he was. He described the wicket as initially slow but acknowledged that once the lights came on, the ball began to slide on, making it easier to time. He had backed the team to chase successfully once a foundation was in place.
Pooran also made mention of his family being present at The Oval, describing it as special to score a fifty in front of them.
MI London skipper Sam Curran, reflecting on the innings from the other end, acknowledged the difficulty of facing Pooran in this kind of form, noting that he had been on the wrong side of such an innings before. Curran suggested that Pooran would have a great deal of fun batting at The Oval.
Sunrisers Left Without Answers
Despite a strong start with the ball that reduced MI London to 51 for 3, Sunrisers were unable to maintain their grip on the match once Pooran took hold of the innings. The 144 they had set proved insufficient as the MI London lower order took full advantage of conditions under the lights. Sunrisers had no answers to the Pooran–Curran partnership once it gathered momentum, and the defeat was comprehensive in the end.
