The Manchester Bee has been woven into the identity of the city for nearly 200 years and remains one of the most recognisable symbols for Mancunians.

Distinctive, eye-catching and a huge source of civic pride, its first formal connection came in 1842, when Manchester was granted its coat of arms, featuring seven bees placed on a globe above the shield.

The bee - more specifically the worker bee - represents the city’s industry, unity and work ethic, while the globe highlighted Manchester’s standing as an international trading city.

During the Industrial Revolution, Manchester became a leader in mass production, prompting comparisons with the worker bee and a hive of activity, as factories were packed with hard-working people who helped turn the city into not just a northern powerhouse, but a global industrial leader in the 19th century.

The meaning behind the symbol runs deep.

Manchester was shaped by the effort and inventiveness of ordinary people - mill workers, engineers, traders, inventors and labourers - whose shared work transformed the city. The bee came to represent their diligence, teamwork and collective strength.

In many respects, the bee mirrors Manchester’s view of itself: hard-working, independent, practical, innovative and intensely proud of its working-class heritage.

The Manchester Bee has survived periods of hardship, two world wars and tragic moments, reappearing time and again whenever the city has needed to come together as one.

HMS Manchester patrolled waters around the UK during the Second World War and was nicknamed the ‘Busy Bee’, with a bee displayed on the ship’s crest and funnel before it was torpedoed in 1942.

Manchester brewing giant Boddingtons adopted the bee in the 1970s, with its barrel-and-two-bees logo becoming almost as famous as the beer itself.

The University of Manchester, too, proudly features three worker bees on its coat of arms.

As the years have passed, the bee has, if anything, become even more visible across the city.

Manchester City FC, always closely connected to the people and history on our own doorstep, unveiled an away shirt in 2009/10 directly inspired by the Manchester Bee, with a black design and yellow shoulder inserts.

That marked the Club’s first direct association, but it was far from the last.

In 2017, after the tragic Manchester Arena attack in which 22 people lost their lives and more than 1,000 others were injured, the Manchester Bee became the emblem of Mancunians’ resolve to stand together in adversity, drawing on the hive mentality of acting as one to find a path through pain and grief.

More than ever, the Manchester Bee came to embody the heart and soul of the city, with hundreds of thousands of pounds raised through an initiative in which Mancunians had the bee tattooed on their arms, legs or elsewhere as a display of unity, sending the message: ‘together we are unbreakable’.

Solidarity, resilience and defiance.

Then, on 20 July 2017, both Manchester City and Manchester United proudly wore the bee on their match shirts during a pre-season friendly in Houston, Texas, with those shirts later auctioned to raise funds for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund.

City then made the bee badge available for supporters to add to replica shirts during the 2017/18 season.

The badge showed the worker bee on a sky-blue patch, with a significant share of the proceeds once again going to the We Love Manchester fund for those affected by the bombing.

For three months in 2018, the Bee in the City exhibition showcased 50 individually designed worker bee sculptures placed throughout the city, both inside and outside buildings and across surrounding suburbs.

More recently, Transport for Greater Manchester launched the Bee Network, with trams, buses and bikes carrying liveries in the striking yellow-and-black colours of the worker bee.

The Manchester of 2026 is, in many ways, once again a hive.

One of the world’s most innovative and forward-looking cities continues to expand and thrive at remarkable speed, driven by hard work, the determination of its people and that hive-like worker bee mentality.

The Manchester Bee has never felt more relevant or more visible, and it remains the ideal symbol of a proud city with an extraordinary story and an unbreakable spirit.

Many cities have official emblems, but very few have one embraced as wholeheartedly by their people as Manchester has embraced the bee.

Visit Manchester says: “Manchester claimed the bee because she is an industrious little grafter, individually insignificant but collectively a superorganism. Together we are stronger.”

And if you have ever wondered why Mancunians say, “I’m buzzing,” when they are happy or excited about something, perhaps all of the above goes some way towards explaining it.
