Almeria Airport in Spain is scheduled to shut for six days to allow for work on its runway, with all scheduled flights cancelled over this period – including Ryanair.
The closure, scheduled for February 2028, will mark the first work on the runway in two decades.
The airport is about a 15-minute drive from the Almeria city centre.
It handles up to 800,000 passengers annually, of which between 55 and 70 per cent of travellers are believed to be Brits.
The runway renovation is part of a 19-month, €29million (£24.8million) upgrade to the entire airport.
Other parts of the project included improving the taxiways, upgrading over 600 lights and replacing 34 directional signs.
During this period, work will be carried out at night between 10.45pm and 7.10am the following day.
Flights between these hours will be impacted and Aena, Spain’s airports operator, has already notified airlines that operate at the airport.
Airlines flying to and from Almeria Airport include Ryanair, easyJet and Iberia. Carriers will have to reschedule flights or divert the routes to other airports.
The Express reported days earlier that Charleroi Airport in Brussels – Belgium’s second largest airport – will close for an 11-week period in 2028 as its runway is renovated and the airport is revamped.
About two million travellers are expected to be impacted by the Charleroi Airport closure, included are Ryanair passengers.
