The first of every month brings with it many new changes, and this year, August also began with some significant changes. These changes directly impact your personal life, financial life, and daily activities. Starting today, August 1st, everything from the process of booking Tatkal railway tickets to the penalty on Income Tax Returns (ITR), LPG cylinder prices, and rules to banking services have changed. Let’s explore in detail the new changes that have come into effect today.

1. New token system for Tatkal railway ticket booking

If you’re bothered by long lines at the counter when booking Tatkal tickets, there’s some good news for you. Starting today, the Western Central Railway (WCR) has implemented a token system for Tatkal ticket booking.

This means that you no longer need to stand in long lines for hours to book Tatkal tickets at the ticket counter without a token. Under this system, tokens will be distributed at scheduled times at the reservation counter. You must first obtain a token from the counter, and then your ticket will be booked when your turn comes up. This new system will significantly reduce the heavy crowds at the counters.

2. Penalty imposed on those who do not file ITR

The Income Tax Department had set the deadline for filing ITR (Income Tax Return) for salaried and other taxpayers as July 31. Those who haven’t filed their returns by the deadline face penalties starting today:

  • ₹1,000 penalty: Those with annual income of ₹5 lakh or less will have to pay ₹1,000 as late fee.
  • ₹5,000 penalty: Those whose annual income is more than Rs 5 lakh will be able to file their ITR with a penalty of Rs 5,000.

3. Commercial LPG cylinders become cheaper, Ujjwala rules changed

Like every month, this time too, oil companies have revised the prices of commercial gas cylinders:

  • Commercial cylinder prices reduced: State-owned oil companies have reduced the price of a 19-kilogram commercial LPG cylinder in the capital, Delhi , by ₹192 per cylinder . Following this reduction, the new price of a commercial cylinder in Delhi has now dropped to ₹2,738 , up from ₹2,930 previously.
  • Update for Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries: In June, the government reduced the number of subsidized cylinders from 9 to 4. Therefore, families who have already received their quota of 4 cylinders between April and July will not receive the ₹300 subsidy for the cylinders they receive in August, and these cylinders will be more expensive.

4. CKYC 2.0 system implemented in banks

To improve customer security and simplify data sharing, the country’s banks, insurance companies, and asset management firms are jointly introducing the Central KYC (CKYC) 2.0 system . This is a completely secure digital process. Under the new rules, financial institutions will be able to obtain necessary and updated details directly from the central registry after receiving customer consent, eliminating the hassle of repeatedly submitting documents.

5. Changes in credit card and bank interest rates

Effective August 1st, select banks have revised their credit card rules. These changes are expected to directly impact customer reward points, late payment charges, and processing fee rates. Furthermore, bank fixed deposit (FD) interest rates, as well as home and auto loan EMIs, may also see changes following decisions from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) MPC meetings in the coming days.
