On the first death anniversary of Dishom Guru Shibu Soren, the great leader of the Jharkhand movement and founder of the JMM, a tribute meeting was held at Randhir Verma Chowk in Dhanbad on Tuesday under the banner of the Jharkhand Movement Struggle Front.
At the event, CPI-ML MLA from Nirsa, Arup Chatterjee, Sindri MLA Chandradev Mahato, and representatives of various social and political organizations paid tribute to Guruji by offering flowers at his portrait. Speakers at the meeting recalled Shibu Soren’s leadership in the Jharkhand movement and his contribution to the state’s formation, saying that his struggle serves as a source of inspiration for the new generation.
The activists demanded that Guruji’s life, his role in the Jharkhand movement, and the state’s formation be included in the state’s school curriculum so that the new generation can become familiar with its history and people’s struggles.
Nirsa MLA Arup Chatterjee said that the Jharkhand dream envisioned by Dishom Guru has not yet been fully realized. He said that the purpose of the state’s formation was to provide respectable employment and rights to local youth, but even today, a large number of youth face unemployment.
He alleged that outsiders are getting jobs through the Jharkhand Public Service Commission’s recruitment processes, which is contrary to the original spirit of the statehood movement. He said that the state’s youth should have the first right to Jharkhand’s resources and government jobs, and the government should take concrete steps in this direction.
Arup Chatterjee said that Guruji fought throughout his life to protect water, forests, land, and Jharkhandi identity. His ideas and struggles should find a place in government policies and the education system, rather than being limited to memorial ceremonies.
Other speakers present at the gathering also remembered Guruji’s struggles, reaffirming their resolve to follow his path, and stressed the need to preserve the history of the Jharkhand movement.
