Arsenal are optimistic about completing more transfer business before the summer window shuts.

Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal are still aiming to add further reinforcements in the transfer market following the signing of Bruno Guimaraes.

The Gunners presented Guimaraes to their home supporters on Sunday, with the Brazilian stepping out onto the pitch before the pre-season loss to Borussia Dortmund.

Guimaraes joined from Newcastle in a deal worth £75million and became Arsenal’s third signing of the summer, after Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis arrived at the club.

Piero Hincapie’s transfer has also been made permanent, but the Gunners are still active in the market.

Arsenal continue to look for more attacking strength and are also keen to sign a versatile defender, especially with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba unavailable.

When asked whether supporters should expect more signings this summer, Arteta said: “Well that’s what we’re trying to do.

“If we have the right player in the market to make us much better, we are very looking forward to that.”

Arsenal let in three goals against Dortmund, just as they did in Dublin against Real Betis.

Even so, Arteta maintained that those two defensive displays have not increased the club’s determination to strengthen in defence.

“I wouldn’t go there just to put it isolated there,” Arteta said.

“We conceded some poor goals the other day, some poor goals today. In the way we competed, especially.

“But that’s a very collective responsibility. So we need to improve with the players that we have. And we want to improve for sure.”

Guimaraes has already begun training with his new team-mates, but it was felt that the match against Dortmund had come too soon for him.

The midfielder could feature against Como on Wednesday night, before attention turns to this weekend’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City.

Arteta spoke of his delight at finally landing Guimaraes after a lengthy transfer saga, with the Brazilian making an immediate impression in training.

“We see very clearly, especially the energy that he brought immediately to the training ground, the hunger, the desire to come here and create a big history at the club,” Arteta said.

“That’s the ambition that we need. We want to go to the next level and I’m very, very much convinced that we’re going to need players with such a personality, desire and character to push everybody inside the organisation to go even higher.

“The versatility to play in two different positions in relation to what we want or the opponent does.

“A player who obviously has tremendous timing and intuition to win the ball back and progress play very, very fast. He’s a player that is very comfortable putting people through, moving between the lines, moving in behind.

“And then he’s a goal threat. He’s got a smell and a really good timing to get in the box. And he has the capacity to finish the actions.”
