Former Indian cricket team stalwart and legendary spinner Harbhajan Singh has offered fascinating insights into the contrasting leadership approaches of two of India’s most successful captains, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Reflecting on the evolution of the national team’s mindset, Harbhajan credited Kohli with instilling an aggressive, fearless attitude within the squad, teaching players to believe that no target or goal is ever out of reach on the international stage.
Shifting the Mindset: Chasing the Impossible
In an interview with PTI, Harbhajan detailed how Virat Kohli fundamentally transformed the team’s psychological approach to high-pressure run chases and final-day Test matches. Comparing the leadership eras, the veteran spinner noted that before Kohli took over the reins following Dhoni’s Test retirement, the team’s collective belief when facing massive fourth-innings targets—such as chasing 400 runs on a final day—was often cautious and defensive.
Kohli, however, injected a radically different philosophy into the dressing room. According to Harbhajan, Kohli would encourage his teammates by saying, “Let’s at least try. We may lose, but if we keep trying, one day we will definitely score more than 400 runs in the last innings.” This winning mentality and refusal to settle for safe draws reshaped India’s approach, particularly overseas.
Spearheading Indian Cricket’s Fitness Revolution
Beyond tactical mindset, Harbhajan emphasized that Kohli’s single greatest contribution to Indian cricket was driving a massive physical and athletic transformation. Assigning 90 percent of the credit for the team’s modern fitness culture to Kohli, Harbhajan explained how the former skipper redefined what it meant to be a professional athlete.
While older generations viewed fitness primarily through the lens of endurance, Kohli convinced the squad that elite physical conditioning could alter match outcomes through exceptional fielding, sharp catching, and the ability to save crucial runs. This cultural shift ensured that raw talent was matched by relentless athletic commitment on the field.
