If you use WhatsApp for messaging, then there is good news for you. WhatsApp is working on a new AI-based scam warning feature that is capable of detecting suspicious chats and alerting users. According to reports, this feature will analyze messages using on-device machine learning. If a conversation shows signs of a scam, users may see a warning in the chat. The thing to note is that this feature will be optional and it is currently being tested with a limited number of beta users.
**Alert for suspicious chats**
According to reports, WhatsApp's new scam warning feature will analyze messages on the device itself to detect whether the conversation is to a potential scam. If the system detects anything suspicious, an alert may appear in the chat. This alert is visible only to the user; The other person involved in the conversation will not be informed about this. The user can then choose to block the contact, report the conversation, or continue the chat.
**Marking a chat as 'trusted' in case of a false alert**
If WhatsApp accidentally marks a normal conversation as suspicious, users can mark that chat as “trusted.” Doing so may remove the alert for that conversation and the feature will no longer flag it. Users also have the option to share up to five of their most recently received messages with WhatsApp. According to reports, this step is completely optional and its purpose is to improve the accuracy of the scam detection system.
**Emphasis on privacy**
Privacy has been given utmost priority while developing this new feature. Reports suggest that even with scam detection turned on, the message content will not leave the user's device for analysis. Flagging a conversation as suspicious does not mean it will automatically be reported to WhatsApp, Meta, or any other party. Users can turn off the scam warning feature whenever they want. Currently, this feature is being rolled out as an optional tool for a limited number of beta users.
