Gunther Werks Will Build Just 15 Extreme GXR-EVOs, and Each One Comes With Its Own Racing Simulator

Even in today’s seemingly endless world of Porsche 911 restomods, very few reimagined classics are as wild as the machines coming out of Gunther Werks. Known for creating some of the most extreme 993-generation Porsche models in the world, the company continues to push the boundaries of Stuttgart’s final air-cooled 911. At this year’s Monterey Car Week, it has unveiled its most hardcore model yet: the Gunther Werks GXR-EVO, a limited-production machine designed to bring track-focused engineering to public roads.

As with every Gunther Werks model, the build starts with a 993-generation donor car. That said, very little of the original machine remains visibly intact, as the GXR-EVO receives virtually every upgrade the company could fit. Its carbon-fibre body has been reworked with a stronger emphasis on aerodynamic performance, bringing new front and rear splitters, dive planes, and an aggressive high-downforce rear wing so large that it required the removal of the rear window and the addition of a stability element.

Weight reduction has also been taken to an extreme level, with Gunther Werks managing to cut an extra 210 pounds compared with the company’s regular Coupe models. In total, the GXR-EVO has a dry weight of only 2386 pounds.

Beneath the rear decklid sits a Rothsport-built 4.0-litre flat-six engine, upgraded with features such as a slide-valve throttle-body setup and intake inlets mounted in the rear quarter windows. Output is expected to be 455 horsepower, which is more than enough for a car this light. Owners will also hear plenty of it, because the GXR-EVO uses an outright straight-pipe exhaust. Neighbours, take note. The engine is paired with a heavily modified G50 six-speed manual gearbox sourced from a 993.

Other performance-focused highlights include a double-wishbone front suspension, RZ three-way adjustable remote-reservoir dampers, a Brembo Pista brake package at the front and rear, an integrated pneumatic air-jack system, and lightweight magnesium centre-lock wheels. The cabin also gets several motorsport-grade components, including Motec displays, a helmet-cooling system, OMP electronic fire suppression, a Racetech carbon-Kevlar racing seat, six-point harnesses, and an eight-point roll cage. The GXR-EVO also features race-grade ABS and an electronic rear-view mirror to compensate for the visibility blocked by its shark fin.

If the performance package alone is not enough to justify a call to your financial adviser, or perhaps your family office, there is more. Every GXR-EVO will also come with a bespoke racing simulator included in the purchase. Built from aluminium and carbon fibre, and fitted with a steering wheel inspired by the real car, Gunther Werks says the simulator is the ideal tool to prepare for a track day in the new machine. The company says software has even been developed to accurately recreate the car’s dynamics within the simulator.

Getting behind the wheel of one in person will not be easy, though, because production will be extremely limited. Gunther Werks plans to build only 15 examples of the GXR-EVO, making the chance to experience one something of a straight-pipe dream.
