New Delhi: Germany's leading airline Lufthansa has started high-speed in-flight internet service for passengers. This facility is being provided through SpaceX's Starlink network. Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter activated the service on the first Starlink-equipped Airbus A320neo aircraft on August 19.

According to the company, Lufthansa Group is planning to gradually implement this technology in about 850 of its aircraft. Through the new Wi-Fi service, passengers will be able to use cloud-based platforms, video calling and other high-bandwidth applications during the flight.

Starlink-powered Wi-Fi service is currently available on select Lufthansa aircraft. Passengers will have to login with their Travel ID or Miles & More account to avail this benefit. This service has been kept free for Lufthansa Group loyalty program and Travel ID users.

Lufthansa said passengers can connect multiple devices simultaneously, although voice and video calls will not be allowed. There will also be a ban on live video recording and transmission.

The company is preparing to add flight information and other services to this portal in future. Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter said that with Starlink the airline is working towards giving passengers faster and better connectivity from takeoff to landing.
