Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Manchester United youngster Habeeb Ogunneye, while the Gunners are also pursuing another Old Trafford talent in winger James Scanlon, according to a fresh update.
On Wednesday, reports indicated that Arsenal were in discussions to bring in Ogunneye, whose contract at Old Trafford is due to expire next year.
The 20-year-old right-back was left out of Michael Carrick’s senior squad for this summer’s pre-season tour, with Jaydan Kamason preferred instead.
The East London-born defender spent last season on loan at Newport County, where he made 21 appearances in all competitions for the League Two club. During that spell, he also picked up useful experience in the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.
Ogunneye is also believed to be at the centre of an international tug-of-war between England and Nigeria, with both nations eligible to call on him through his birth and family heritage.
England Under-21s boss Lee Carsley has labelled him a potential “future star”, although he has not yet played for the Three Lions beyond Under-17 level.
Standard Sport reports that Arsenal have “now agreed a deal” with United to sign Ogunneye. He is expected to undergo his medical today, with official confirmation of the transfer likely over the weekend.
The move will be a free transfer, though the Red Devils will keep a 40% sell-on clause in the event of any future sale. Ogunneye is set to link up with Arsenal’s Under-21s at the Emirates, while also being offered the chance to train with Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad. However, Arsenal’s business may not stop there.
The North London club are also in talks to tempt Manchester United prospect James Scanlon away before the transfer window shuts on 1 September.
Able to play on either wing, the 19-year-old is also comfortable in a central attacking midfield role. He made six appearances on loan for Swindon Town last season and scored once.
Scanlon is already a full international, having earned 24 caps for Gibraltar, for whom he qualifies through his mother’s side of the family. He is the only Red Devil in history to represent Los Llanis.
Arsenal are reportedly “confident over a deal for Scanlon as personal terms are not expected to be an issue”. He is said to be a “serious target” for the Premier League champions.
Overall credibility: 9/10 Why?
Arsenal’s interest in both Ogunneye and Scanlon has been widely reported. Standard Sport is regarded as a reliable outlet for London-based transfer developments, particularly those involving the Emirates. However, neither club has yet issued official confirmation.
