The Indian Navy has received Mangrol, an indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC). Built specifically for operations close to the coast, the vessel can detect and track enemy submarines in shallow waters where larger warships cannot easily operate. Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) delivered this advanced warship on August 21, 2026.

Why Is Mangrol Special?

Designed to hunt submarines in coastal waters, Mangrol uses powerful water-jet propulsion and can reach speeds of around 25 knots. It features advanced sonar and radar systems to spot underwater threats. For defense and combat, the vessel is armed with anti-submarine torpedoes, an RBU-6000 rocket launcher, a 30-mm naval gun, and remote-controlled 12.7-mm guns. It can also lay naval mines and handle low-intensity ocean operations.

Where Was Mangrol Built?

Mangrol was designed and built in Kerala by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). It is the third of eight ASW-SWC vessels being constructed by CSL for the Indian Navy. More than 80% of its components are made in India, highlighting the nation’s growing defense manufacturing capabilities.

Why Is It Named Mangrol?

The ship is named after Mangrol, a coastal town and fishing port in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. The name honors the legacy of an earlier naval minesweeper, INS Mangrol, which served the country until 2004.

Why Is It Important for the Indian Navy?

India has a vast coastline, key commercial ports, and island territories that require constant protection. Protecting these shallow waters against submarine threats is critical to national security. Mangrol expands the Navy’s underwater surveillance reach, strengthens its submarine-hunting capability, and supports the country’s push for self-reliance in naval manufacturing.
