After electing to bat, India's openers got off to a composed start and looked comfortable for most of the first hour. KL Rahul was looking in good form, but just before the drinks break, he was caught by the wicketkeeper while chasing the ball going outside the off-stump of Lahiru Kumara. Padikkal had a nervous start and was lucky to avoid being dismissed twice; His catches were missed at point and slip.

At the same time, Jaiswal adopted an aggressive approach and hit three fours in one over of Asita Fernando, but later in the same over he was bowled by the same bowler. There was also an argument between the two players during a tense moment on the field. After this, Shubman Gill and Padikkal looked confident at the crease and handled the Indian innings with a good partnership.

Till lunch break, India has scored 88 runs after playing 25 overs in the first innings. Captain Gill is unbeaten on 11 (29) and Padikkal is unbeaten on 13 (35). India will hope that these two players will be able to carry forward this good start after lunch, although the Sri Lankan fast bowlers are still getting some movement with the new ball, which could make the next session interesting.
