How to Beat Mega Starmie in Pokémon GO
Samira Vishwas | August 24, 2026 6:24 AM CST

Mega Starmie is a Water- and Psychic-type Super Mega Raid boss in Pokémon GO. That typing gives it several useful weaknesses, including Bug, Dark, Electric, Ghost, and Grass attacks. Super Mega Raids introduce extra mechanics, so simply bringing strong counters is not enough. A coordinated group and careful shield management can make the battle much easier.

Mega Starmie can become enraged during the fight and use shields that reduce incoming damage. Each Trainer can help break one shield with their Mega Pokémon. Once the required shields are removed, the boss becomes vulnerable to normal damage again.

Best Counters for Mega Starmie

The best approach is to build a team around powerful Pokémon that exploit Mega Starmie’s weaknesses. Strong choices include:

  • Mega Sceptile with powerful Grass attacks
  • Mega Mewtwo Y for strong Psychic-based damage and useful overall power
  • Mega Tyranitar with Dark-type attacks
  • Mega Absol with Dark-type attacks
  • Mega Heracross with Bug-type attacks
  • Mega Mewtwo X as another strong option
  • Shadow Pokémon such as Shadow Mewtwo, Shadow Tyranitar, or Shadow Sceptile

Mega Sceptile is especially attractive because Grass attacks hit Mega Starmie for super-effective damage. Dark- and Ghost-type attackers are also excellent choices when properly powered up.

Do not rely on Primal Groudon or Primal Kyogre for the shield-breaking role. Primal Pokémon cannot break shields in Super Mega Raids, so bringing them for that specific purpose can leave your team at a disadvantage.

How to Handle the Super Mega Raid

Team size matters. Mega Starmie is designed around coordinated Super Mega Raid play, and recommends at least seven Trainers. More players make the encounter more forgiving, especially if some participants have weaker counters.

Before entering, make sure your Pokémon have the correct attacks and enough health. Your strongest available Mega Pokémon should be ready to enter when the boss activates a shield. Work with your group instead of treating the raid as individual battles.

When a shield appears, your Mega Pokémon is automatically sent into the battle. Its next attack receives a major power increase, allowing it to contribute to breaking the shield. Every Trainer has an important role during this phase, so avoid wasting your opportunity.

Which Moves Should You Avoid?

Mega Starmie’s Water and Psychic typing means its moves can punish counters that look good on paper. Pay attention to the moveset shown before the battle and adjust your team when necessary.

Grass counters can be excellent, but they may struggle more if Mega Starmie has strong Ice coverage. Dark Pokémon are often dependable because they resist Psychic attacks, while Ghost attackers can deliver heavy damage without depending on the same weaknesses as Grass Pokémon.

The goal is not to use one perfect counter. Create a balanced team that can keep dealing damage even if its moveset threatens one part of your lineup.

Tips for Winning More Consistently

A few habits can improve your results:

  • Power up your best counters before the raid.
  • Use Mega Pokémon so your group can handle the Super Mega Raid mechanics.
  • Coordinate with other Trainers before the battle begins.
  • Prioritize breaking shields when they appear.
  • Bring several counters rather than relying on one Pokémon.
  • Revive and re-enter quickly if your first team is knocked out.
  • Avoid using Primal Pokémon for shield breaking.
  • Take advantage of Mega Starmie’s Bug, Dark, Electric, Ghost, and Grass weaknesses.

Preparation removes much of the difficulty. A well-organized group with strong counters will have a far better chance than a team that simply enters with its highest-CP Pokémon.
