Tension erupted at Camac Street in central Kolkata on Thursday after Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) officials, accompanied by police, arrived to remove a billboard outside the Trinamool Congress office of party general secretary and Diamond Harbor MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Abhishek Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, reached the spot after learning about the proposed removal. Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien and other associates accompanied him.

A heated exchange followed between Banerjee and KMC officials over the legality of the billboard. While civic officials maintained that it had been installed illegally, Banerjee questioned the validity of the order produced by the KMC team.

Banerjee argued that the order was invalid because it did not contain a photograph of the billboard. Following the dispute, a section of KMC officials returned to the corporation office to obtain a revised copy of the order.

Speaking to reporters, Banerjee accused the state government and the KMC of targeting the Trinamool Congress and alleged that there was an attempt to weaken the party through administrative action.

“There is an attempt to end the Trinamool Congress forcibly. Why is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) so scared?” he said, alleging that the administration had previously prevented the party from holding meetings and processions and was now targeting its leaders, offices and billboards.

Addressing state BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, Banerjee said: “The Trinamool Congress symbol is a grass flower. The more the grass is cut, the more it will grow.”

The Diamond Harbor MP also alleged that the billboard outside his party office was being selectively targeted while billboards belonging to other offices and shops in the area remained untouched.

“We will move the Calcutta High Court against this move. Nobody is above the Indian Constitution,” Banerjee said.

KMC officials and police, however, alleged that Banerjee and his associates obstructed government officials from carrying out their duties.

The confrontation comes amid continuing political tensions in West Bengal, with the latest dispute centered on the civic body's action against the billboard at the Trinamool Congress office.
