Atlético Madrid have issued an official statement explaining their stance.
“The Board of Directors has given unanimous backing to the club’s strategy.
The members of Atlético Madrid’s Board of Directors have unanimously expressed their complete support for the club’s decision not to enter into negotiations over Julián Álvarez’s transfer to Barcelona. The Board members recognise that Atlético Madrid are open to discussions that form part of the transfer market, but only when they are conducted in an ethical and professional way, and with respect between clubs.
We fully support the position already communicated by the club that Barcelona have not fulfilled these requirements and, as a result, there have been no negotiations, nor will there be any with them regarding Julián Álvarez’s transfer.”
