Geetu Mohandas and Yash’s much-anticipated film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has become the subject of a fresh controversy following reports of legal notices being sent to individuals who posted content about the movie online.

The film, which arrived in theatres on Wednesday, was reportedly at the centre of legal proceedings even before its release. According to reports, the makers approached a Bengaluru court and obtained a temporary interim injunction aimed at preventing the publication of allegedly false, defamatory or misleading content concerning the film.

The legal development has now gained further attention after several YouTubers were reportedly served notices over content they shared about Toxic. The issue has also spilled onto social media, with X users claiming that they faced legal action after discussing the movie and its online ratings.

One such user, operating under the name Daredevil_boy, claimed to have received a legal notice after posting about the disappearance of Toxic’s ratings on BookMyShow. The user shared screenshots of the alleged notice along with the earlier social media post in which they had questioned why the film’s ratings were no longer visible on the platform.

Following the alleged notice, the X user criticised the film’s team and questioned whether legal action was necessary over what they considered to be relatively minor criticism. The post attracted attention online as users debated the extent to which filmmakers should be able to respond to criticism posted on social media.

Another X user, Lonely_prabh, also claimed to have received a notice from KVN Productions, one of the companies associated with the film. According to the user, even posts discussing reviews and BookMyShow ratings had allegedly resulted in legal action. The user indicated that they would have to remove the posts following the notice.

The claims circulating on social media have added another layer to the discussion surrounding Toxic, which has already generated considerable interest because of its large-scale production and Yash’s return to the big screen.

The controversy also highlights a broader practice within the Indian film industry, where producers and production houses have occasionally turned to courts and legal notices when they believe online content could damage a movie’s reputation or commercial prospects.

Such measures can become particularly significant during the opening days of a major release, when audience reactions, reviews, ratings and social media discussions can influence public perception and potentially affect box-office performance.

There have been similar instances involving prominent Telugu and Kannada films in the past, with filmmakers taking legal or copyright- action against online creators over allegedly misleading or defamatory material.

In one previously reported case, Telugu YouTuber Sushant, who runs the channel Barbell Pitch Meetings, alleged that copyright strikes and legal notices had been used against his content. He claimed that such measures could temporarily restrict negative reviews during the critical opening period of a film’s theatrical run.

The latest allegations surrounding Toxic have therefore reignited a familiar debate about the balance between protecting a film from false or defamatory claims and allowing audiences and independent creators to express genuine opinions.

While the alleged legal notices have drawn criticism from some social media users, the exact circumstances behind each notice, including the specific content cited as objectionable, remain important in determining whether the action was directed at misinformation, potentially defamatory statements or ordinary criticism.

For now, the controversy continues to unfold online, with claims from individual users adding to the wider conversation surrounding Toxic and the increasingly complicated relationship between filmmakers, critics, YouTubers and social media audiences.
