Sanju Samson: Sanju Samson will be a part of the Chennai Super Kings through IPL 2026. Sanju captained the Rajasthan Royals, but he has only joined the Chennai Super Kings as a player. Ruturaj Gaikwad has been captaining the team, but CSK has failed to make the playoffs for the past three seasons. This has led to calls for significant changes to the team. Former Indian cricketer Sadagopan Ramesh has created a stir on social media by calling for Sanju Samson to be appointed captain.
‘Sanju Samson should be made the captain…’
Sadagopan Ramesh, in a post on his Instagram account, has demanded a change in CSK’s leadership. He said, “CSK is exploring different options for the captaincy and is also assessing what changes are needed. Sanju Samson should be made captain because he is a great team player. CSK’s captaincy should be changed, and if that happens, they should definitely seriously consider Sanju Samson.”
Ramesh said, “Sanju Samson has captained 66 matches in the IPL and has won 33. His win percentage is 50%. Under his leadership, Rajasthan Royals have performed well and reached the final. CSK needs to make some changes, and simply appointing Sanju Samson as captain won’t win them the trophy. However, if they change captains, Sanju Samson should be considered.”
Rituraj Gaikwad’s performance as captain
Ruturaj Gaikwad was appointed captain of the Chennai Super Kings in 2024. Since then, Gaikwad has captained CSK in 33 matches, winning only 14 of them. Chennai Super Kings have lost 19 matches under his captaincy, with a win percentage of just 42.4%.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s performance in IPL 2025 and 2026 was disappointing. After scoring over 500 runs in two consecutive seasons, Gaikwad played only five matches in IPL 2025 and scored just 122 runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to make an impact in IPL 2026 either. He appeared in 14 matches, scoring 337 runs at an average of 28.08, scoring just two half-centuries. Clearly, the last two seasons have been poor for Gaikwad, both with the bat and as a captain. It wouldn’t be surprising if there were a change in leadership.
