Indonesia Volcano Eruption: Volcanic ash from Indonesia's Mount Anak Krakatau eruption on Sunday spread as high as 50,000 feet over parts of Java and Sumatra, disrupting air travel and affecting hundreds of flights. The volcano which had been sleeping for 8 years in the South Asian country suddenly woke up and due to this, the pace of Indonesia came to a halt.

301 flights affected
According to reports, flights at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport were halted until 1.30 pm local time due to volcanic ash. The ban affected 301 flights, including 58 international flights, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at Indonesia's main airports.

According to officials, volcanic ash is extremely dangerous for aircraft. Small particles of ash can reach the aircraft engine and damage it. Apart from this, pilots may also face difficulty in seeing ahead due to dense ash cloud.

The volcanic eruption had a direct impact on air passengers. Around 209 flights were affected and travel of around 22,800 passengers was disrupted. Many domestic flights had to be cancelled, while some international flights were diverted. At the airport, passengers' eyes were constantly focused on flight announcements.

Schools and fishing affected
Disaster management agency BNPB said it would run an operation to modify the weather, which could also include 'cloud-seeding' to bring rain and help remove volcanic ash.

According to reports, many schools canceled their activities on Saturday due to ash causing irritation to the eyes of students and locals, and fishermen also stopped going fishing.
