The summer transfer window may still be nearly two weeks away from officially opening, but Manchester United are already acting with the urgency of a club approaching deadline day.

In an early show of ambition, INEOS have finalised an agreement with Atalanta to bring in Brazilian midfielder Ederson. The deal, which is valued at around £39 million including add-ons, represents United’s first major move of the transfer period.

Attention has now shifted to another midfield target as United look to strengthen their squad further before the transfer window even begins.

According to SportItalia journalist Gianluigi Longari, Manchester United are preparing a formal bid for West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, with an official offer expected to be made in the coming days.

Longari highlights that the Premier League heavyweights are not content to stop at Ederson and are ready to test West Ham’s resolve over their highly rated young midfielder soon.

The Italian reporter did not specify the details of United’s opening offer for Fernandes.

Nevertheless, given that the Portugal international is tied to a long-term deal in East London, any bid would likely need to be substantial.

West Ham signed Fernandes from Southampton last summer in a transfer worth approximately £38 million. Reports from The Times suggest that the Hammers are hoping for a fee in the region of £80 million.

However, following their relegation, West Ham are now facing financial challenges. This situation could work in Manchester United’s favour, allowing them to negotiate a more affordable deal for the 21-year-old, provided no bidding war emerges.

Fernandes has attracted widespread attention thanks to his deep-lying playmaking qualities, alongside his sharp tackling and strong ball-carrying ability. The former Sporting CP talent has quickly become one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe.

In addition to Manchester United, both Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be monitoring the player closely.

Despite the competition, it is believed that Fernandes, who looks up to compatriot Bruno Fernandes, is keen on a move to Old Trafford this summer.
