New South Wales recorded a convincing 131-run victory over South Australia in the One-Day Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground on September 20, 2025. In pursuit of 289 for a win, Redbacks never got any traction as NSW's bowling unit put unstoppable pressure before their batsmen accumulated the runs. The turning point came in the 43rd over when opener Matthew Gilkes was run out for 99 by an incredible direct hit from Jason Sangha at extra cover.
Following Kurtis Patterson's 73 off 84 balls that stabilized the pursuit after Blake Nikitaras's premature exit for 20, Gilkes took the score to 180 before being sent packing. Gilkes was facing Jordan Buckingham's 43.3rd over when he drove for a single and Sangha, well placed at extra cover, caught the throw and knocked over the bails with the non-striker yards short of his crease.
Umpires removed, and Gilkes was left heartbroken on 99 off 107 balls with seven fours to his credit. Even with the disappointment, Chris Green's 38 not out off 19 deliveries guaranteed NSW an imposing total of 288/7.

NSW spinners choke South Australia to seal the win
South Australia gave an early indication that they were up for it through Mackenzie Harvey's 60 off 55 deliveries, with six fours and two sixes. But Josh Hazlewood's disciplined seamers and spin twin-pillars stole the show. Tanveer Sangha spun webs to claim 4/35 as Green replicated the achievement with 4/25.
South Australia faltered from 100/3 in the 17th over to 157 all out in 36.3 overs as wickets came at frequent intervals. There was little resistance in the form of late 28 by Brendan Doggett as NSW captain Sean Abbott organized his attack with precision. The Redbacks' bowlers never allowed the pressure of the required run rate to let up, draining the life out of the pursuit.
With the win, New South Wales continue their grip at the top of the One-Day Cup table. For Gilkes, the close miss will be a motivating force, and with runs coming, a first century is inevitable. The Redbacks now anticipate solidifying their dominance within the group phase on their return to the SCG.
