Woodlice will turn and scuttle away from house if one thing they hate is left out

They're the little grey creatures which you can usually find teeming under rocks or garden ornaments - but when woodlice start appearing in your house it's usually something you need to sort before it gets worse.

Despite their size, their shell and their wiggly little legs, woodlice are actually not insects, they're crustaceans. Related more closely to prawns than bugs, woodlice have barely changed in millions of years and used to live in water before moving to land. This is why you'll still find them in damp, dark places.

And if you find them in your house, it probably means it's too damp and you need to take action to tackle the underlying moisture which can also cause mould, mildew and rot.

But if you just want to quickly get rid of woodlice, there are a few very simple, very cheap natural repellents that will see these pests turn and scuttle in the opposite direction.

According to Pest Control Direct, you can place one of several natural deterrents around your house in order to repel woodlice.

It says: "Dealing with a woodlice infestation can be frustrating, but there are several do-it-yourself (DIY) remedies and prevention methods that can help you eliminate these pests and keep them at bay. By utilising natural repellents, creating DIY traps and baits, harnessing the power of essential oils, and maintaining a clean and dry environment, you can effectively control woodlice infestations.

"Place citrus peels, such as orange or lemon peels, in areas where woodlice are active. The strong scent repels woodlice and discourages them from infesting your space."

Another bonus of citrus peels is that spiders also hate them, so in one fell swoop you can block both much-hated arachnids and annoying woodlice from turning up uninvited.

Other repellents include essential oils.

Pest Control Direct adds: "Peppermint oil: dilute peppermint oil with water and spray it in areas where woodlice are present. The strong scent acts as a natural deterrent.

"Lavender oil: mix lavender oil with water and apply it to infested areas. The fragrance repels woodlice and helps keep them away.

"Tea tree oil: dilute tea tree oil with water and spray it in areas prone to woodlice infestations. The strong aroma repels woodlice and discourages them from returning."
