Raipur News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 60th All India Conference of Directors General/Inspectors General of Police at the Indian Institute of Management, Raipur. The theme of this three-day conference is ‘Developed India: Security Dimension’. The Prime Minister stressed the urgent need to change public perception about the police, especially among the youth, for which efficiency, sensitivity and accountability should be promoted. He stressed the need to strengthen urban policing, re-energize the tourist police and raise public awareness about the new Indian Justice Code, the Indian Evidence Act and the Indian Civil Defense Code, which replaced colonial-era criminal laws.

The Prime Minister directed the state and union territory police and wider administration to adopt innovative strategies to integrate uninhabited islands, make effective use of the integrated database under the National Intelligence Grid (NETGRID) and link these systems through Artificial Intelligence to obtain actionable intelligence. He called for encouraging universities and educational institutions to conduct case studies on the use of forensics in police investigations, and said better application of forensics would further strengthen the criminal justice system.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of establishing mechanisms for regular monitoring of proscribed organisations, ensuring overall development of areas free from Left Wing Extremism and adopting innovative models to strengthen coastal security. The Prime Minister stressed that tackling drug abuse requires a whole-of-government approach, combining enforcement, rehabilitation and community level intervention. In-depth discussions were held on various issues of national security in the conference. Discussions took place on long-term roadmap of policing towards Vision 2047, emerging trends in counter-terrorism and counter-radicalisation, leveraging technology to enhance women’s safety, strategies to bring back Indian fugitives living abroad and strengthening forensic capabilities to ensure effective investigation and prosecution.

The Prime Minister stressed the need for stronger preparedness and coordination and urged police chiefs to strengthen effective disaster management mechanisms for cyclones, floods and other natural emergencies, including the current situation of Cyclone Ditva. He stressed that proactive planning, immediate coordination, rapid response and a whole of government approach are necessary to ensure minimum disruption and protection of lives during such incidents. In his address, the Prime Minister called upon the police leadership to reorganize the police system to meet the aspirations of a developing nation, so that it can be on the path to becoming a developed India.

The Prime Minister presented the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service to Intelligence Bureau officers. He also presented awards to three best performing cities in urban policing. This honor has been instituted for the first time to encourage innovation and reform in urban policing. The conference was attended by the Union Home Minister, National Security Advisor, Minister of State for Home and Union Home Secretary. Director Generals of Police and Inspector General of Police of all States and Union Territories, as well as heads of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and central police organizations participated physically, while over 700 officers of various ranks from across the country joined the conference virtually.
