New Delhi: The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, hotly contested and opposed by several Opposition parties for the manner of its conduct, has been extended by a week.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday announced the extension of the SIR schedule in 12 states and Union Territories, thereby giving voters some more time to ensure that their names are correctly included in the electoral rolls.
SIR is currently being conducted in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
Under the revised schedule, the enumeration drive and polling-station rationalisation will continue until December 11, instead of the original December 4.
The draft roll will be published on December 16, while the final rolls will be published on February 14, 2026.
THE REVISED DATES
* Enumeration period: Extended to December 11
* Rationalisation and re-arrangement of Polling Stations: By December 11
* Updation of control table and draft roll preparation: Dec 12 to 15
* Publication of draft electoral roll: December 16
* Period for filing claims and objections: December 16 to January 15, 2026
* Notice phase (issuance, hearing & verification): December 16 to February 7, 2026 — Election Returning Officers (EROs) will address claims, objections and enumeration forms.
The 2025 SIR exercise was kicked off in Bihar in June, ahead of the Assembly elections there.
The second phase covers 12 states and Union territories, and will be followed by every other state and UT. The objective of the SIR process is to ensure that electoral rolls are accurate, up-to-date and inclusive.
