Fake ticket racket busted in Central Railway, FIR against three passengers

Central Railway has taken major action on the increasing cases of fake tickets in Mumbai suburban network. Railways has lodged an FIR against three passengers caught traveling with fake UTS season tickets generated by AI. Two cases found within two days have increased the concerns of the authorities.

The first case came to light on November 26, when traveling ticket inspector Vishal Navale caught a woman with a fake season ticket in the Kalyan–Dadar AC local running at 10:02 pm. The ticket bore UTS number

Subsequently, at 6:45 am on November 28, ticket examiner Prashant Kamble caught three passengers with suspicious tickets in Parel–Kalyan AC local. Passengers show tickets from the “My Files–Documents” folder in their phones, while genuine UTS tickets are displayed directly from the official UTS app.

During investigation, the same UTS number (XOOJHN4569) was found on all three tickets, whereas each genuine ticket has a different number. Also, no valid tickets were issued from their mobile numbers in Railway records. After this, all three were immediately handed over to Kurla GRP.

“Prashant Kamble’s alertness and sharp inspection ability has led to the busting of yet another fake ticket racket. His commitment is an example for other employees,” an official said. According to Central Railways, traveling with a fake ticket is a punishable offense under the Indian Code of Justice (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), 2023. If found guilty, the punishment can be a fine of up to Rs 1,000, imprisonment of up to 7 years, or both.

Officials say the tickets in both cases were generated using AI tools. This has raised concerns that ticketing fraud could increase rapidly by misusing technology. Railway cyber team is investigating the matter in depth.

Railways has warned passengers to buy tickets only through authorized channels like station ticket counters, ATVM machines or the official UTS mobile app. “Use of fake tickets is a serious crime. No passenger will be spared,” the Railways said. After this action, Railways has made it clear that strict monitoring will continue on ticketing fraud in Mumbai suburban network and strict punitive action will be taken on such cases.
