Self-confessed "nepo-daddy" Martin Kemp should have been TV "gold" in the I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here, jungle. As a member of Spandau Ballet, one of the biggest pop groups of the 1980s, he surely has a tale or two to tell. He also spent time on EastEnders playing the dastardly Steve Owen, and audiences love some good soap gossip. The fact that he is in the camp with another former star of the long-running BBC soap, Shona McGarty, could have made for some great banter and bonding about their behind-the-scenes experiences.
Sadly, he is barely visible on screen and isn't being voted to participate in the trials by the public. It has become a running joke on his social media, with his team posting several humorous references to his limited screen time. While he is definitely popular with viewers, his discretion and all-around nice guy demeanour are proving his undoing.
A large part of Martin's appeal is his family man image. He has been happily married to former Wham backing singer Shirlie for 37 years.
While many of his contemporaries spent the 80s sowing wild oats, he was a one-woman man, which is hugely commendable but doesn't really lend itself to showbiz gossip. And let's be honest, that is what the viewers want. A good, shocking yarn would guarantee him both screen time and headlines.
We want him to spill the tea about the group parting ways with lead singer Tony Hadley. We want to know whose side he was really on when the rest of the band sued his brother, Gary, for songwriting royalties in a high-profile court case in 1999. We want to know if any of the group succumbed to the advances of groupies.
Martin is far too polite and discreet to discuss such things, though. While he has shared his and Shirlie's fertility struggles, which resonated with many, it isn't exactly hot gossip.
With so many large and loud personalities in camp, it is important to stand out, and Martin just isn't getting a look in.
His multitude of female fans isn't helping either. Many have loved him since they had his poster on their wall as schoolgirls, and they probably think they are doing him a favour by not voting for him to undergo some gruesome jungle torture.
In reality, what they are doing is ensuring he gets less screen time, as those who receive trials tend to be seen more often. Ironically, I think Martin would attack those challenges with gusto. He seems to have a genuine zest for life and a willingness to try new things.
Unless he starts doing something to make himself stand out and get some screen time, Martin may as well have gone camping in Devon for a month - and the food would have been better.
