The cheapest electric 'car' in 2026 is £7,695 bargain - but there's 1 big catch

Motorists can get their hands on the cheapest electric vehicle for a bargain price tag, but there's one major loophole. Road users can get the keys to the plucky Citroen Ami for just £7,695, making the vehicle less than half the price of the next cheapest EV, the £15,990 Dacia Spring.

From the outside, the Ami may look like a car, but it actually isn't what you'd believe. Instead, the Ami is technically a quadricycle, meaning the vehicle can actually be driven by anyone over the age of 16. The Ami is tiny, measuring just 2,410 mm in length, 1,390 mm in width, and 1,525 mm in height.

It's small size could make it the perfect city runaround ideal for those hoping to dip their toes into the EV market for the first time.

The RAC explained: "Technically speaking, the Citroen Ami is the cheapest road-legal, four-wheeled, fully enclosed electric vehicle on sale today.

"Notice how we didn't use the word 'car'. The Ami is actually a quadricycle - meaning it's limited in terms of weight, power and speed but can also be driven from the age of 16."

When securing the Ami on a PCP finance deal, customers can get the keys in their hands for as little as £19.99 per month, after a £2,300 deposit. However, as a quadricycle, the Ami comes with fewer safety regulations than a proper car which could deter many road users.

The model is not equipped with any airbags and doesn't even have ABS or traction control. The Ami's range is also limited, with owners likely to achieve just 46 miles off a single charge.

The model also has a top speed of just 28mph and will come with restrictions on where the vehicle can be driven. As a quadricycle, the model cannot be driven on UK motorways with the vehicle far too slow and dangerous for use on high-speed roads.

The AA previously explained: "The Ami is a great little urban vehicle, but you really would need to live or work in the city to benefit from it.

"The Ami Cargo with just one seat might be a great option for zero-tailpipe emission local deliveries for small business such as a florist. It would also be a great way to advertise your business as these vehicles do get noticed."
