Seoul. South Korea’s former first lady Kim Keon has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a case. Her husband and former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is already in jail. Let us tell you that on Wednesday, a South Korean court convicted former first lady Kim Keon in a corruption case and sentenced her to 20 months in prison. This decision on Yeol’s wife Kim Keon comes a few weeks before the order comes in the case of martial law (military rule) imposed by former President Yoon Suk Yeol a year ago.
The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Kim for receiving gifts from the Unification Church in exchange for business favors. The verdict was surprising, as the independent prosecutor had sought 15 years in prison for Kim on charges of bribery, stock price manipulation, and violating the political funding law. The court acquitted Kim of stock price manipulation and political funding law violations, citing a lack of evidence. Kim’s defense team thanked the court for the decision, but called the 20-month prison sentence for bribery “comparatively excessive.” The team said it would consider appealing.
