Here's everything you need to know about Manchester United's Mason Greenwood clause
Initial clause: Manchester United agreed a sell-on clause with Marseille when Mason Greenwood moved to the French club. Reports vary on the size of the clause but it is believed to be in the region of 40-50 per cent .
Changes to the sell-on amount: When the deal was agreed, the size of the clause was variable based on Greenwood's achievements with Marseille. The Ligue 1 side's qualification for the Champions League is understood to have triggered add-ons to the initial fee paid, while also reportedly seeing the sell on percentage drop .
Marseille's discount: Marseille paid United a sum of up to £26.7million to sign England international Greenwood. United are understood to have accepted the smaller fee due to the knowledge they would also be able profit from a future sale.
Profit or total fee: One of the remaining questions concerns whether United's cut relates to Marseille's profit - as reported by The Telegraph - or to the total fee paid by Greenwood's next club. A return of 40 per cent of the total fee, for example, would be significantly more money than 40 per cent of the profits.
FFP and PSR: One thing we do know is the impact on Financial Fair Play and United's compliance with Profit and Sustainability Regulations. Greenwood is a homegrown player, meaning any fee recouped in relation to the forward can be logged as pure profit for the Premier League club.
United's buy-back: United are also believed to have a buy-back option, which can be exercised if another club comes in for the player. However, they are not expected to exercise said option unless something changes.
The Getafe factor: There's an added complexity to the deal thanks to an agreement between United and Getafe when Greenwood spent a year on loan with the Spanish side. According to The Athletic, Getafe will be entitled to 20 per cent of United's takings from any future sale by Marseille.
Greenwood's rising valuation: While Marseille paid a sum considered to be lower than Greenwood's market value, his form in Ligue 1 has led to reports of an asking price in the region of £60m. Barcelona are among the clubs to have been linked with the 24-year-old, and - if the sell-on clause ends up relating to profit rather than total fee - United would walk away with £10.66m (40 per cent of the £33.3m profit made by Marseille, minus 20 per cent for Getafe).
