Rajamouli says 'Varanasi' shot in IMAX to capture grand vision

Acclaimed filmmaker SS Rajamouli recently revealed that his upcoming film, Varanasi, was shot in IMAX format to capture its grand scale and vision.

He explained this decision during a discussion at the film's trailer launch event last year, which has now been posted online.

The director emphasized that the choice of format was essential for certain scenes, particularly those set in Antarctica and featuring Ramayana elements.

'To encompass them is why we need the bigger format'
Technical details

Rajamouli elaborated on his decision, saying, "The format is to encompass the scale."

"For example, the Antarctica portion, the Ramayana portion, you have seen how they're tall and vertical."

"To encompass them is why we need the bigger format. That has been the main reason why we filmed in IMAX."

He added that all technical aspects would be handled by his Director of Photography (DOP), while he would focus on conveying his vision for the film.

Fond memory

Rajamouli also shared a fond memory of his interaction with Hollywood director James Cameron during the last awards season.

He recalled, "I have seen his clips talking about RRR again, and it made me happy once again."

"We had a long conversation, and his words that I remember most is, 'You continue doing the films the way you do it.' That's one thing I remember from him."

Cast and release date

Varanasi stars Mahesh Babu as Rudra, who rides a bull and wields a trident in the streets of Varanasi.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays Mandakini, while Prithviraj Sukumaran essays the role of antagonist Kumbha.

The film's title was announced in November 2025 at an event in Hyderabad. It is scheduled for a worldwide release on April 7, 2027.
