A garage specialising in tyres is beginning to wind down its UK operations following a long period of cost cutting. ATS Euromaster announced it would stop doing business in Britain after making plans plans to close 86 of its least profitable service centres in 2025. To protect as many jobs as possible, the firm said it's pursuing two buyers that showed interest in taking over parts of the network.
Its plan is to sell 35 of its 152 sites to Formula One Autocentres, and 14 sites to S&M Tyres, which trades as Elite Garages. ATS Euromaster said these sales would make the network left behind too small and unable to cover enough of the UK to compete properly and be economically viable.
They would also still leave 703 jobs at risk of redundancy across its head off is Aston, call centre, and remaining 103 sites.
Nick Harley, group managing director, called it a "sad and difficult moment". He said competition and rising costs have left the company with "no viable path forward" to break even.
He added: "Our number one priority now is to treat every employee fairly and respectfully, fully appreciating that many have enjoyed long careers with us.
"Colleagues transferring to the new owners will do so with continuity and stability, while those in locations proposed for closure will be supported through collective consultation."

The sites due to close will remain open during the consultation phase, which is expected to end in April of this year. If the proposals go ahead, the final day of trading would be May 1.
ATS Euromaster said a package of support will be agreed for staff, including a 24-hour assistance programme and specialist outplacement support.
In another proposal, it suggested moving 13 mobile night technicians to Tructyre - another Euromaster Group business that specialises in mobile tyres for trucks and other commercial vehicles.
