Kunigal: An elderly woman was allegedly murdered and her gold ornaments stolen in Ujjini village of Huliyurdurga hobli in Kunigal taluk, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Nagamma (85), a resident of Ujjini village. According to preliminary information, miscreants entered the house when the woman was alone.
Police said the attackers first threw chilli powder into Nagamma’s eyes. To stop her from shouting, they allegedly pressed her face with a pillow and suffocated her to death. After the murder, the accused took away two gold bangles from her hand and a gold chain from her neck before fleeing the spot.
The miscreants also broke open a cupboard in the house and scattered clothes while searching for cash and valuables.
Crime discovered after two days
Nagamma’s children live in Bengaluru. The family suspects that the incident may have taken place on Sunday. When the children tried calling her on Monday and Tuesday, she did not answer the phone.
Worried about her safety, they contacted acquaintances in the village and asked them to check on her. When neighbours went to the house, they found Nagamma dead, bringing the incident to light.
Police begin investigation
After receiving information, Huliyurdurga police visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered and police have launched a search to trace the accused who are currently absconding.
