Significant Increase in MBBS Seats for NEET UG 2026

NEET UG 2026 Update: Exciting news has emerged regarding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for Undergraduate (UG) courses. This year, a larger number of students will have the opportunity to enroll in MBBS programs. Specifically, there is an increase of over 11,000 MBBS seats for the year 2026. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has published this information on its official platform. Additionally, Union Minister of State for Health, Anupriya Patel, confirmed this increase in MBBS seats during a parliamentary session.


New Medical Colleges and Seat Increases

Let's delve into the recognition of new medical colleges across the nation, which has contributed to the addition of over 11,000 MBBS seats. Furthermore, we will examine the rise in postgraduate (PG) medical seats.


**Recognition of 44 New Medical Colleges**
In the academic year 2025-26, 44 new medical colleges received official recognition, as reported by Union Minister Anupriya Patel in the Rajya Sabha. With these new colleges recognized, candidates will be able to apply for over 11,000 additional MBBS seats starting from the academic session 2026-27. This brings the total number of medical colleges in India from 780 to 824.

The NMC has raised the number of MBBS seats by over 11,000 for the academic session 2025-26. This increase is expected to greatly benefit NEET UG candidates, ensuring they have ample opportunities for admission within the country. In total, the number of MBBS seats has increased from 1,18,190 to 1,29,603, allowing more students to pursue their MBBS education in India.

According to data from the NMC, Union Minister Anupriya Patel also announced an increase in medical postgraduate seats, with an addition of 8,967 seats. This count includes seats at prestigious institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and other Institutes of National Importance (INIs).
