Thousands of crores will be added to the government treasury

India has the largest number of internet users and the highest data usage in the world. It is estimated that if the tax is implemented at the rate of Rs 1 per GB, the government can get an additional revenue of around Rs 22,900 crore every year. However, this is still only a proposal and no final decision has been taken on it.

Mobile data cheaper in India, but already 18% GST

India is one of the countries in the world where mobile internet rates are cheapest. Due to this, the use of video streaming and social media has increased tremendously. Currently, consumers are paying 18 percent GST on mobile recharges and postpaid bills. If this new data tax comes into effect, it will be in addition to the existing GST, which could strain the budget of the common consumer.

At present, the government has only asked to study the feasibility of the proposal. The report at the end of this study will examine both the advantages and disadvantages of this tax.
