Mumbai, March 13, 2026: A program on mental health is organized through Mpawar, an initiative of Aditya Birla Education Trust. Women in Mumbai Underlining the troubling psychological stress that women of various age groups have to deal with are family conflicts, relationship tensions and marital challenges. This data shows that adolescent girls are consistently seeking support and this shows that there is a growing awareness and openness among young girls about mental health.

Over the last year from Mumbai These conclusions are drawn from the information generated by MPower’s counseling centres, helplines, social activities, school activities and mental health services:
Those who need support include:

  • Of these, 200,760 beneficiaries are teenagers (0-17 years) and most of them have come in contact through these schools or social activities.
  • 22,940 women aged 18-25 years approached for academic stress, career uncertainty and relationship challenges.
  • Of the 19,864 women aged 26-49, counselors were consistently aware of marital problems, relationship stress, and family stress.
  • 5,968 women over the age of 50 were asked about family stress, loneliness, and psychological stress caused by caregiving, as well as changing family circumstances.

According to professionals working in the field of mental health, although adolescent girls are increasingly coming through social activities, the increasing trend of young women towards counseling services and helplines shows that they do not hesitate to seek help.

Counselors in various activities observed that romantic stress, marital stress, and family stress mostly spoke to women about changing relationship factors, work stress, and expectations arising from changing city environments.

Similar trends can be seen from the comparative data in the western region. Mental health professionals across western India express concern about relationship instability, work-home stress and mental instability, especially as they struggle to balance family expectations and professional responsibilities. Overall, these findings highlight how changing social roles, relationship pressures and family expectations are shaping women’s mental health experiences in urban India.

Commenting on the findings, Neerja Birla, founder and chairperson of Aditya Birla Education Trust and Mpower said, “Women’s mental health is not only shaped by personal experiences, but also by how they interact with their daily work, family and community. Through Mpower’s work in different cities and communities, we have seen that women are openly talking about their mental health and seeking support. A We as a society need to respond and take simple measures, creating sin-free practices in homes, workplaces and also in society to address women’s health.”

Head Psychiatrist of Empower The Center in Mumbai Dr. Harshida Bhansali added, “In Mumbai, we found that adolescent girls are benefiting from mental health programs through schools and social activities, which is a great step towards early intervention. Relationship problems, family expectations and psychological distress are frequently discussed among young and older women. This information allows us to design treatments to be more positive and address women’s negatives.”

According to mental health experts, the fact that women are availing of mental health services is an indication of increased awareness among women and reduced apprehension about seeking professional help. These findings highlight the importance of building mental health awareness, empowering counseling services and creating a supportive environment in schools, families, workplaces and communities to address women’s mental health challenges.
