Many hotels in Bengaluru have been closed due to shortage of LPG supply, leading to a decline in demand for vegetables. As a result, prices of vegetables have fallen significantly in the markets, leaving traders and farmers in distress.

Bengaluru: There has been a huge decline in the trade of vegetables in the markets due to closure of many hotels and reduction in menu due to non-supply of LPG. Prices of vegetables have also fallen due to reduced trade. Traders are worried about this. If the situation continues like this, there is a possibility of further decline in the sales of vegetables.

'There has been a decline in vegetable trade in the last two-three days. The business was reduced to half on Saturday. Hotels are closed due to shortage of LPG. Some hotels are cooking less food. Therefore, they are buying less vegetables. Hoteliers mainly buy vegetables in bulk. They are our main customers,” said Raju, a wholesaler at Kalasipalya vegetable market.

Prices have fallen due to less purchasing. K.R. In the market, carrot has become available at Rs 20 per kg, radish at Rs 10 per kg, and brinjal at Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg. The prices of most other vegetables are around Rs 40. Generally, prices of vegetables remain high in summer. But, due to the LPG problem the prices have fallen. I pray that this crisis ends soon,” Raju said.

There has been a 10% decline in vegetable sales. Customers are buying due to availability of gas supply in their homes. But, if this situation continues then we will have problems. The wedding season starts after the Ugadi festival. By then the situation should improve. Because, without gas, cooking at weddings will also become difficult. It is difficult to cook food in large quantities quickly even using a wood stove,” Prakash, owner of a vegetable market at Dasanpura on Tumkur Road, told Kannada Prabha.

Impact on farmers too

If vegetables are not bought and sold in the market, it also affects the farmers growing vegetables. If vegetables are not purchased, the vegetables grown by farmers face problems in reaching the market. The shortage of gas supply has initially affected the hotel industry, but in the coming days it may trouble the food providers as well.
