New Delhi:The megastar of the century, Amitabh Bachchan has always won the hearts of the audience with his strong acting and excellent films in Hindi cinema. Many of his films were hits in the early years of his career and his name was everywhere in the 70s. His films during this period include Sholay, Don, Amar Akbar Anthony, Deewar, Kabhie Kabhie and Maqaddar Ka Sikandar.

The 1978 film Maqaddar Ka Sikandar created a special place among the audience. Stars like Rekha, Rakhi and Vinod Khanna were also seen in this film along with Amitabh Bachchan. But there is an incident to this film which has made a place in the hearts of the audience even today. Actually, for a very emotional scene of the film, a song of only four lines was required and Mohammed Rafi was specially called for this.

The film’s music directors Kalyanji-Anandji decided that this scene should convey such pain that it would directly touch the soul of the audience. Although all the songs were being recorded with Kishore Kumar, Rafi’s voice had the emotional depth to bring the entire scene to life in just four lines.

Initially, Kalyanji-Anandji were a little hesitant whether Rafi Saheb would come for just four lines. But as soon as he told his views to Rafi, Rafi happily accepted the request. He came to the studio and recorded those four lines and left without taking any fee.

At the end of the film, when the death of Amitabh’s character is shown and this four-line song plays – Zindagi to bewafa hai, ek din thukrayegi, maut mehbooba hai apne saath lekar jaayegi, marke jeene ki ada jo duniya ko sikhlayga woh muqaddar ka sikander kahleega – every audience in the theater had tears in their eyes. Rafi’s painful voice and Amitabh’s excellent acting made this scene memorable even today.

This song and scene is considered to be the most powerful example of emotion in the history of Bollywood. The pain and emotions presented by Rafi Sahab in just four lines touched the hearts of the audience. Even today, when one watches this scene, one gets goosebumps and is reminded of the power of music and acting of that era.
