In a major development for air travelers, new regulations have been introduced that will relieve passengers from hefty fees associated with seat selection during flights. Under these updated guidelines, approximately 60% of the available seats will be open for selection at no additional cost. Previously, many airlines charged passengers between ₹500 to ₹3000 for choosing their seats.
This new policy is expected to benefit families and groups traveling together the most. Airlines will now be required to ensure that members of the same booking, such as families or groups, are seated together whenever possible. Previously, it was common for family members to be separated due to the inability to pay for seat selection, causing inconvenience.
According to the new directives, airlines must allocate the majority of their seats to the general category, which will not incur extra charges. Only specific seats, such as those in the front row, those with extra legroom, or emergency exit seats, will attract additional fees.
Passengers have expressed that this decision was long overdue, as airlines were profiting excessively from seat selection fees. This was particularly burdensome for those traveling with children or elderly individuals, who often felt compelled to pay for seat selection.
Experts believe that this decision will make air travel more convenient and passenger-friendly, thereby increasing public confidence in air travel.
While detailed regulations from airlines are still pending, it is anticipated that this arrangement will soon be implemented across all domestic flights.
