There is not much time left for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to start. The 19th season of the tournament will start from tomorrow (Saturday). In the inaugural match, the teams of defending champion Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will face each other. As IPL approaches, discussion has started regarding Purple Cap and Orange Cap and who will win these awards this time.
The bowler who takes the most wickets in the IPL season is awarded the Purple Cap award. The top scorer of every IPL season is given the Orange Cap. These are the biggest individual awards of the tournament. These awards are very important for any bowler and batsman, because it is not easy to keep one’s performance at its peak continuously in such a long tournament. The consistent good performance of a player also impacts the team. In such a situation, let us know how many times the players who have won Purple and Orange Cap have made their team champion.
This trend remained in the first two seasons
IPL was started in 2008. Sohail Tanvir played an important role in Rajasthan Royals’ title win that season. He won the Purple Cap by taking 22 wickets in 11 matches. After this, when Deccan Chargers became the champion in the next season, RP Singh was the Purple Cap winner. He took 23 wickets in 16 innings and led Deccan Chargers to the title.
In the first two seasons of the tournament, the team whose bowler took the most wickets won the title. After this, this was seen directly in 2016. Bhuvneshwar Kumar made Sunrisers Hyderabad the champion that season by taking 23 wickets in 17 innings. Since then, the Purple Cap winner player has not been able to win the IPL trophy that season.

- RP Singh – 2009
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 2016
How lucky is the orange cap?
The player who won the Orange Cap in IPL till 2013 remained away from the trophy that season. Robin Uthappa of Kolkata Knight Riders ended this drought in the 2014 season. He scored 660 runs in 16 innings in 2014 and also became IPL champion with the Orange Cap. He gave KKR consistently good starts that season and played an important role in winning the trophy. After Uthappa, Ruturaj Gaikwad repeated this feat in the 2021 season. He made CSK the champion by scoring 635 runs in 16 innings and also won the Orange Cap. Since then no player has been able to win the trophy and the Orange Cap simultaneously.

- Rituraj Gaikwad – 2021
This happened in 13 seasons of IPL
While Purple Cap winning players have made their teams champions thrice, Orange Cap players have been able to do so only twice. In IPL 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, those teams have become champions in 13 seasons, in which there was neither a Purple Cap winner nor a player who won the Orange Cap.
