Silchar, May 7: The main urban roadway connecting Capital Point to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) via the Central Road-Rangirkhari-Meherpur stretch on National Highway 306 has turned into a daily challenge for commuters. The road is riddled with potholes, waterlogged craters, and deteriorating surfaces, making travel a test of patience.

The NH 306 (Urban Link), particularly the segment from Meherpur to SMCH, has become a chaotic route, sparking significant political backlash and public frustration.

Commuters, including office workers, students, patients, and emergency vehicles, are forced to navigate what many are calling a “pothole minefield.”

Recent pre-monsoon rains have further highlighted the inadequacy of recent repairs, exacerbating the situation. Traffic jams, vehicle damage, and increased accident risks have become commonplace along this vital route.

In response to the growing concerns, Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha has reached out to the General Manager (Project) of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), bringing attention to the “deteriorating condition” of the highway from Capital Point to SMCH via Rangirkhari.

In his correspondence sent on Wednesday, he pointed out the numerous potholes, uneven surfaces, and severely damaged areas, emphasizing that these conditions present “serious safety hazards” for commuters, especially patients and students who depend on this road.

Purkayastha highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that the road is essential for emergency services and overall traffic management, particularly during the monsoon season.

While he acknowledged that the Assam PWD has begun work on connecting stretches towards SMCH and Kathal Road, the Rajya Sabha MP stressed that the main section under NHIDCL’s oversight, from Capital Point through Rangirkhari, remains ‘neglected’.

He urged for immediate restoration efforts, asserting that prompt action would alleviate traffic congestion, lower accident risks, and provide much-needed relief to the public.

Meanwhile, Silchar Lok Sabha MP Parimal Suklabaidya expressed his “deep anguish” regarding the road's deteriorating quality.

He mentioned that during a prior meeting before the Assembly elections at the District Commissioner’s office, he had consistently advised the responsible agencies to adhere to durable construction standards.

This stretch is particularly important due to the presence of several private nursing homes and its direct connection to SMCH, making its condition a public health issue. Recently, residents from the Meherpur area, frustrated with the ongoing situation, approached the district administration demanding urgent repairs.
