This is the first time since the beginning of the Middle East war that the prices of petrol and diesel have increased in India. The possibility of increase in the prices of petrol and diesel due to the Iran war was there for a long time. However, it was not extended due to elections in 5 states. Now a huge increase has been made within 10 days of the elections being over. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the people of the country to save fuel. He had emphasized on working from home and less use of personal vehicles. Since then there were indications that the prices of petrol and diesel may increase.
Prices had not changed since 2024, there was a cut before the elections.
Let us tell you that the prices of petrol and diesel in the country had remained stable since March 2024. Just before the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the government had given relief to the public by reducing the prices by ₹ 2 per liter. However, due to the Iran war and closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the supply of oil and gas in the country has almost come to a standstill. At the same time, oil companies were incurring losses due to increase in the price of crude oil.
