According to the report, people from many countries including Sri Lanka, Canada and UK have been caught or are under investigation in this case. Investigation revealed that some people voted by making fake Indian identity cards and when they started leaving the country, the ink on their fingers revealed the matter. Along with this, the agencies are also investigating how the data of foreign citizens who came to the state before April 23 was used.
In this case, a case has been registered against the accused under serious sections like fake voting and fraud in elections. On the other hand, this incident has also raised questions on the Special Revision (SIR) process of the voter list. Before the 2026 update, there were 6.41 crore voters in the state, but after investigation, about 74 lakh names were removed and the number came down to 5.67 crore. Despite this, the inclusion of non-citizens in the list is a matter of concern. Experts are now trying to understand how such a mistake happened even after such a huge investigation.
An official said that as per the existing rules, if a voter is not present during door-to-door verification, any adult in the family can fill the form on his/her behalf. It is being suspected that this provision may have been misused, however the investigation is still going on and it is too early to reach any conclusion.
