According to reports, the accident occurred when an insulator-laden lorry collided with a jeep carrying pilgrims who were returning to Kollur after visiting Kodachadri hills and Sarvajna Peetha.
A woman identified as Jyothi died on the spot. Arya A., who suffered serious injuries, died while being shifted to a hospital in Manipal.
The injured Arjun, Mini and Jyothish have been admitted to a hospital in Manipal. Jeep driver Devaraj (48), Anush K.S. (29), Abhi (36), Avani and Ayan were admitted to a private hospital in Kundapur.
Police said around 40 pilgrims from Kottayam in Kerala had arrived in a bus to visit the Kollur temple. After darshan at the temple, they travelled to Kodachadri hills in five separate jeeps.
While returning to Kollur, an insulator lorry travelling from Kollur towards Nittur reportedly rammed into one of the jeeps near Dali bridge. Six people, including three children travelling in the jeep, suffered serious injuries.
The bodies of Jyothi and Arya A. have been sent for postmortem examination. Kollur police have registered a case.
Meanwhile, locals said traffic congestion has increased in the region as both heavy and light vehicles are being diverted through the Sigandur-Nittur route due to road repair work in the ghat section. Residents alleged that overspeeding vehicles have made the stretch accident-prone and urged the police department to take steps to control vehicle speed in the area.
